NIJAC unveils Lay Magistrates Website Hub

Are you interested in helping shape justice? Do you want to serve your community? Can you make fair and balanced decisions in challenging situations?

If so, the upcoming Lay Magistrates recruitment scheme could be your opportunity to play a key role in Northern Ireland’s justice system.

Lay Magistrates play an essential role in ensuring that justice is rooted in local communities. No legal background or formal qualifications are required. Instead, working alongside experienced judges in the family and youth courts, they bring their own perspectives, judgement and insight to decisions affecting some of the most vulnerable individuals in our society. Their contribution helps keep community at the heart of justice.

The Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission (NIJAC), which is responsible for this recruitment, has recently launched a dedicated Lay Magistrates Hub on its website. This brings together everything you need to understand the role, check your eligibility and learn how to apply. The Hub is designed to help you make an informed decision and give you the confidence to take part in the selection process. You can also sign up for NIJAC’s eNews campaign to be notified when the scheme launches and applications open.

NIJAC also encourages anyone interested to connect via social media. Over the coming weeks, you’ll hear from current Lay Magistrates, see behind-the-scenes insights, and learn more about what to expect during the selection process. Follow NIJAC on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or X to stay up to date on the latest news about this opportunity.

Becoming a Lay Magistrate is a chance to make a meaningful difference in your community and across Northern Ireland. If you believe in fairness, independence and the importance of giving back, we encourage you to explore the role, learn more through the Hub, and consider taking the next step. Together, we can ensure that justice continues to reflect and serve the people it exists to protect.
